Collector Bits: Mischief Makers

A wildly under appreciated game for the N64, Mischief Makers will forever be a staple among my retro game collection. During a time that saw the vast majority of game developers transitioning to full 3d games, true sidescrollers became a bit of a rarity on the N64. But during this time dominated by the discovery of 3d, a 2D gem was created.

The plot is simple: A loony scientist by the name of Professor Theo and his robotic maid, Marina, have just landed on the planet Clancer, which is inhabited by a race called the Clannad. The professor is captured by the emperor and it’s now up to you, Marina, to save your creator. Pretty straight forward.

The game was developed by Treasure (who also brought us Gunstar Heroes for the Sega Genesis) and published by Enix in 1997. It was originally released in Japan a few months before the NA release under the title Yuke Yuke!! Trouble Makers. By early 1998, Mischief Makers was released to all regions. Riddled mixed reviews and mediocre gameplay ratings, the game quickly became an extremely underrated title with a small, but very devoted fan base. It’s not an incredibly rare game and can be easily found on Amazon, but the value has seen a spike in value from $10 up to around $15 loose in the past couple years.

You will find that Mischief Makers does nothing ground breaking or breathtaking, but it does most everything right. A very solid release and one of only a few sidescrollers for the N64. This game has been one of my favorites since it was released and is a true gem for the Nintendo 64.

Pricing 2015
